Review: Silent Hill Downpour

I didn't have very high expectations for Silent Hill Downpour; the series has been following a downward trend that started with the third game. While I personally enjoyed Silent Hill Homecoming, I can't say the game didn't have it's issues but it definitely had some elements that Downpour lacks. As a fan of the series and a good sport however, I decided to play it.

In the newest Silent Hill game you delve yet again into the twisted alternate reality of the mysterious town and explore the decaying psyche of a new protagonist. Players assume the role of Murphy Pendleton; similar to other protagonists of the series, Murphy has a guilty conscience and a dark past that is slowly revealed throughout the game.

Story

I plan to reveal next to nothing on the story since Silent Hill is all about the mystery and the twist at the end. So you can read on without having to bump into any spoilers. I liked the story of Downpour, yet I found it predictable; perhaps because as the fifth game in the series many elements of Silent Hill have become cliche. So if you're well acquainted with the series, don't expect to be too surprised. I can say with confidence that the story flows well and that it has all the elements of a Silent Hill game from the creepy and unexplained to the demented and just plain weird.

The game begins with Murphy in Prison; as the opening credits roll players are given a tour of the jail before being put on a bus with some other inmates to be transferred. It is unknown why Murphy is in Prison but the story will explain all. On the bus ride, things get rowdy and turn to worse when the bus swerves off the road and crashes into a creek, oh and did I mention the Silent Hill sign you passed about two minutes ago? It's all downhill from here as players take control of Murphy and dig up the past to fix the future.

Gameplay

As a Silent Hill game, Players should expect elements of light combat, puzzle solving, survival and horror. Downpour does a good job of blending the elements together but they aren't perfect. A lot of reviews seemed to complain about 'clumsy combat'. There is an attack button which can be held down for power attacks, a block button and a lock on button which allows you to easily track your target. It's not that hard nor did I feel it was difficult to operate. While the combat was easy I can't say it was as fun as past games. I really enjoyed the dodge/roll ability from Silent Hill Homecoming which was replaced in Downpour by the block button.

A multitude of melee weapons are scattered across silent hill and available everywhere. From basic tools such as hammers, crowbars and axes to the traditional pipes, 2x4s and even bricks, players will have no trouble finding a weapon nearby anywhere in the town. Weapons are breakable and don't last forever and some serve a specific purpose such as pulling down a ladder or breaking down a barrier. Firearms such as a pistol and or shotgun are available as well and looking in the right places will net you a nice collection of ammo. Players can only carry one melee weapon and one firearm at a time giving the game a more realistic feel. The flashlight and radio combo make a return as well. Players can also find a UV flashlight which is used to solve puzzles later on. Don't expect to turn off your light and radio however to avoid enemies, it didn't work for me.

I felt the enemies in the game were perhaps the greatest weakness; they were completely uninspired and just very boring. There are only 2 common types of enemy aside from the bosses whom I also felt were boring. One is some old-hag looking lady that screams at you and then tries to just maul you. The other is a man with some strange device on his head who basically does the same thing without screaming. They are the most common type of enemy you will encounter and very lame. The third and fourth enemies are slightly more interesting but are encountered less throughout the game. Dubbed the "weeping bat" this white monster has the ability to crawl on ceilings and sometimes during combat just stays up there and you can't do anything. Aside from him is an enemy called a 'doll'. You'll encounter mannequin looking women who stand still and statuesque but have some kind of invisible entity that attack you. You can attack the entity or the mannequin to deal damage to this foe. Nightmare sequences make a return yet players also have to escape The Void; a monstrosity that appears in nightmare sequences and chases you sucking all matter into a black hole-like vortex. I won't reveal the bosses so the game isn't spoiled but all but one seemed forgettable to me and again uninspired. The enemies didn't feel like they were from a Silent Hill game and were very disappointing; I felt there could have been more variety and creativity involved in their creation.

The other downfall of Downpour was in it's usually cleverly thought out puzzles, riddles and exploration. I set the puzzle difficulty to the highest mode as I usually do in all the Silent Hill games and yet I felt that the puzzles weren't all that hard. While some puzzles were decent and took more time than others, many lacked that Silent Hill vibe I  was looking for.

The town of Silent Hill is open-ended similarly to the other games yet this time around you are able to explore buildings, houses and other establishments. I really enjoyed this feature and it definitely worked well to break up the pacing of the game. Inside these buildings or just around the town you can find side-quests for Murphy which will reward you with weapons, health items or clues and documents pertaining information to the story. I enjoyed breaking from the main story every once in a while and just exploring and seeing what I could dig up; the side-quests had their own mini-stories which worked very well in the game. While you're exploring outside, you need to be mindful of pouring rain from which the game earns its title. As it begins to rain enemies will become more plentiful and aggressive during combat so the best idea is to seek shelter inside until the storms pass.

Some of the side-quests you can initiate were actually pretty scary and had that twisted Silent Hill  element the series is well known for. As far as the horror experience goes in Silent Hill you can expect some genuine scares even if you're familiar with the series. The game employs methods used in past Silent Hill games such as creepy noises, screams, cries, dark rooms, situations that just mess with your head and those moments that make you jump in your seat.

Downpour has no HUD so players will have to take cues from Murphy's physical condition on how much health he has. As you take more damage, Murphy will become more visibly wounded with blood and tears showing up on his body. Take on even more damage and he"ll begin to limp and pant. Actual health percentage can be checked by pausing and looking in the statistics menu.

Graphics/Sound
Downpour is easily the best looking and sounding of the series to date. If you're a fan of the Dexter series on showtime you may even recognize Daniel Licht as the composer of the games soundtrack. The music for the game fit great and really set the mood, however times were it actually played were few and far between. While musical scores of Silent Hill have always been pretty strong, voice acting hasn't. Downpour's actors delivered a great performance and the dialogue was much better written than in previous games.

The graphics are also the best the series has delivered yet as well. Facial expressions and character movement looked natural and worked well with what was going on. If Murphy was mad, sad or scared his face and his body language showed it very well. The same applies for the other characters in the game and I felt the updated graphics were possibly the strong-point of the game. Small elements such as clothes waving or becoming wet in the rain were also given proper attention. Dynamic lighting and detailed environments  helped deliver the horror-themed atmosphere of the game. The town of Silent Hill looked great and you can actually see it because it isn't always hidden behind a dense curtain of fog. The streets and buildings give the town a creepy feeling as they just echo with feelings of isolation. Exploring was easily my favorite part of the game because the environments were so well done. From run-down establishments to dark festering caves the locations of Silent Hill felt very strong and immerses players into the world of Silent Hill perfectly.

Overall

Overall the game was entertaining but wasn't without its shortcomings. Downpour's story was good but I felt the game ended too soon; I was surprised when I realized I was finishing the game after only about ten hours even with the side-quests. The graphics and sound of the game were the most impressive and surprised me the most while the actual gameplay was somewhat disappointing and lacked some of the basic yet important features of past Silent Hill games. All-in-all, the game was still fun to play through and I still enjoyed it and that's why I chose to give it a solid 7.5 rating.

Black Ops 2 Outed by Target

While it's no surprise to anyone and the official announcement is on the way in just a few days, these pre-order cards from Target suggest that the next Call of Duty game will be named Black Ops II. There is also a visible release date for November 13, 2012 which sounds appropriate for a Call of Duty title. Target has already confirmed the reserve cards are legitimate and the game will be released on November 13th. The game is scheduled to officially be revealed during the NBA playoffs on May 1st, so keep an eye out for a cryptic teaser trailer.

Sony Reveals Platform Brawler: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Rumors and speculations have been swirling for months concerning Sony's 'brawler' themed game and it's finally been revealed. Play-Station All-Stars: Battle Royale in a nutshell is Sony's version of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. All-Stars will feature characters exclusive to the PlayStation platform that battle it out with unique fighting styles and moves in evolving arenas taken from Sony exclusive games. The game was revealed at a Sony press conference in Los Angeles where attendees were given a chance to play the game. The video posted below shows the game itself in action.

While All-Stars is similar to Super Smash Bros, the game brings its own ideas to the table and has much to offer, especially to big Sony fans. The game features a unique scoring system forces players to beat the snot out of each other to gain AP. Gaining AP allows players to use a special meter which has three levels of intensity. Players reported that on the third tier of his special, Sweet Tooth could transform into his mech and annihilate the competition. Kratos on the other hand dons the familiar armor from GOW2 and hacks other players up with the Blade of Olympus. It's interesting to see what the specials of other characters such as Nathan Drake- who will undoubtedly be present- will be like since he has no supernatural abilities.

So far the only characters that have been revealed are Parrapa the Rapper, Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Colonel Radec, Sly Cooper, and Fat Princess. All characters have a unique skill-set and attacks. Colonel Radec apparently meant to be a ranged fighter but can engage in close combat with Sweet Tooth can plant mines or Sly Cooper has the ability to turn invisible in lieu of have no ability to block. However, Sly cooper can apparently steal precious AP from other players which gives him quite the advantage. Parappa the Rapper who doesn't have much of combat background beside his kung-fun training incorporates signing and skating into his skills. While only six characters have been revealed more are surely on the way such as Nathan Drake, Sackboy, and Cole McGrath.

As for the arenas, developer SuperBot has taken a unique approach to create an evolving arena. One arena begins in the underworld with Hades attempting to smash players with his axes. So while you fight against other players you have to mindful of where that axes lands as it will create a shockwave type of effect. Then it isn't long before the Patapon army invades the scene to distract the angry god but now you have to watch out for the spears they start lunging at you. Other levels seen included elements from Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, and even the game BUZZ! invades the game forcing players to answer questions to avoid taking damage.

From what's been made available for our viewing pleasure, the game definitely looks fun and I can't wait to see more on it. No doubt Sony already has a slot for All-Stars lined up during their press conference at E3.

Skyrim DLC on the Way? Possibility of Crossbows and Snow Elves?

Rumors are swirling after some investigative players found some interesting files hidden in the new update patch. The folder of files named 'DLC01' contains assets for a Snow Elf Prince and crossbows! This could mean players may be meeting with Snow Elves that haven't quite devolved into the wretched Falmer and that we can shoot them with crossbows...or not so much.

On a more serious note however, Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media has trademarked "Dawnguard". As of now it has not been announced what it is. It could be a new game or the name of this Skyrim DLC waiting to be announced. The name would fit well with the DLC if it were based on Snow Elves considering part of the reason they lost their sight was because they were driven underground and deep into caves.

Nothing is for sure though so I guess we'll have to wait patiently until Bethesda is ready to reveal their plans for the first of Skyrim's DLC.

Two New Screenshots from Hitman: Absolution

Our favorite bald assassin seems to be up to his usual activities in these two new screenshots. I'm sure we can all assume he wasn't invited to this little get-together and he has more sinister motives. Apparently the barbecue was arranged by Mason McCready; likely 47's target. If you look closely, there is a type of logo painted onto the wall. It reads 'Cougars' with some illegible text under it. Could this be a possible gang? Guess we'll have to wait to find out. Hitman: Absolution currently has no release date but is expected to be released this year.

Gaming Pet Peeves

It's that one thing in a game that you just can't ignore; it bothers you to a point that you begin to ask yourself 'why' or 'how'. It doesn't ruin the experience nor is it a game breaker, it's just kind of...annoying. I'm sure everyone has one. It's not a complaint like bad graphics, bad voice acting or weird shooting mechanics; those are the types of things you criticize a game on. To give you an idea what I mean, I'll confess a few of mine.

No Visible Damage After a Boss Battle
Probably the biggest of all my peeves, I hate in a game when you finish a boss battle complete with gunshots, explosions, stabbing and everything else and the ensuing cut-scene depicts the protagonist and the boss both huffing and puffing, yet neither of them have a scratch. It feels kind of hokey seeing the bad guy falling to the ground suffering from wounds I can't see; I would compare it directly to a death scene from an old black and white movie in my head sometimes. I'm not saying I want to see every mark I could have possibly made throughout the fight but it would be nice to at least see some visible damage on my opponent.

Too Many Doors!
I love when a game separates itself from all the action and just gives me some time to explore. What gets me is that sometimes there's just too much to explore. I'm the kind of person that has to explore every possible nook and cranny of every location in every game. I'm a complete item, ammo, weapon hoarder; I have to find everything. I hate when I'm going about my business exploring and I run into that fork in the road or that hallway that has like ten doors because I have to look in every single one of them. It turns into which one am I supposed to go in so I know to go there last. Sometimes I realize when I choose a certain path I may be going deeper into the mission, quest or whatever so I end up turning around and backtracking to check out the areas I may have skipped. It sounds crazy but in Games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Dead Space I find myself hoping doors will be locked or paths blocked so I don't get stuck endlessly exploring.

Can't Swim
I hate in games when you can't swim; it almost never makes any sense to not be able to swim in a game. Take the first Assassin's Creed game for instance; Altair would drown if players fell in the water and the game would reload your last checkpoint. How can a master assassin not swim or just instantly drown after falling in water!? I ran into this problem a few times in Assassin's Creed; there were always those jumps or leaps that you just missed. Altair just didn't grab the ledge, ran into the wall and fell into the seemingly perilous water below. Red Dead Redemption is another game that this peeve particularly annoyed me. I know that a lot of people in that day and age couldn't swim but that doesn't make it okay for John Marston to drown and again die instantly from standing in waist deep water.

I probably have a couple other peeves other than the ones listed here but they don't come to mind at the moment. I know a lot of people can relate with the peeves I've listed and that there are many others out there so feel free to list yours in the comments section!

Prey 2 Delayed Not Cancelled

It was recently reported that the sequel Prey 2 has been indefinitely delayed. The game was showing great promise with bits of news here and there until there wasn't anything at all. I assumed Human Head had decided to stay tight lipped until E3 but apparently that was not the case. Without going into too much detail because there really aren't many at the moment, it seems Bethesda is not satisfied with the quality of the game. In a PR statement from Bethesda they revealed the game will not get a 2012 release date but that they are working hard to ensure the game meets their quality standards.

Right now, it's good news the game isn't cancelled and that Bethesda has the fans in mind. In a way it's bittersweet; while the game won't be available this year the delay will hopefully ensure a higher quality and more successful game. Let's just hope work can continue on the game soon since it hasn't been touched since November of 2011.

You can read the PR statement here.
Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.
